Tell your City Councilmember that New Yorkers want Trump to pay for the disruptions the first family will cause in New York City!

THE ISSUE: Melania and Barron Trump plan to remain in NYC till Barron completes his school year. This means a big impact on the city's infrastructure, as their daily motorcade will require NYPD protection as well as rerouting of traffic, and we'll likely see frequent visits from the president, which means delays at JFK as well (and a $1,000,000 daily bill whenever the president himself is in town). This will impact working class NYers the most, who don't have the ability to reroute their travel around the first family's schedule, but it will affect every NYC tax payer, and draw NYPD from what should be their focus: protecting and serving New Yorkers, not acting as an extension of the Secret Service. We're asking you to print out and send your city councilmember a letter request that they seek funds from the Trump administration or the Trumps themselves to help subsidize the cost of having NYC act as an annex to DC.

4. Mailing a hardcopy of your letter is the most effective way to to get your representatives' attention. Congressional staffers say letters that include a handwritten component or something written/illustrated by children receive more eyeballs than form letters or petitions.

Dear [Councilmember X]:
I’m writing to express my concern regarding recent news that Melania and Barron Trump will choose to remain living at Trump Tower rather than relocate to the White House after President-Elect Trump’s inauguration. As you are no doubt aware, New York City’s infrastructure is not equipped to handle the daily accommodation and protection of the First Lady and child, and the diversion of traffic patterns, funding, and resources required would have a large and negative impact on New Yorkers’ mobility and quality of life.
We have already begun to see the ways in which the President-Elect’s travel to and from the city forces the closure of bridges and tunnels, major delays at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and the deviation of the NYPD from our communities to assist in Secret Service operations. However, a daily Secret Service-aided commute across the city to and from Barron Trump’s Upper West Side elementary school, in addition to coverage any time Melania leaves her home and the President-Elect visits on weekends, would mark an unprecedented burden on the city’s resources.
As always is the case, working-class people with hourly jobs, limited job security and no ability to work remotely will be the ones harmed the most by decreased mobility wherever the Trump motorcade goes. But virtually all residents of the city will be impacted by the diversion of our tax dollars from funding the city’s infrastructure and police force to instead supporting and solely benefitting three residents.
As such, I request that the city seek federal funding from the Trump Administration, or the Trump family itself, to aid in offsetting the costs of Barron and Melania’s transportation and protection. The family has made a personal choice to eschew a move to Washington DC, the city and home that possesses the capacity to effectively serve and protect them; the people of New York City should not have to suffer in the face of that self-serving decision.
